Hardee Plot at Elmwood Cemetery:

The Hardee plot at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham has been an ongoing project of the Wheeler camp for several years. This plot was originally purchased by the Hardee camp of the United Confederate Veterans for the internment of those Veterans who had no place to be buried. The Wheeler camp has replaced the headstones that were damaged or missing as well as replacing the missing the Crosses of Honor. We have also assisted the families who have Veterans buried at Elmwood and other cemeteries in the area. We hope to take over ownership of the plot so that we can have space available for gravesites if remains of Confederate Soldiers are discovered. In 2005 a historical marker was unveiled and dedicated on the Hardee plot. We have also found and marked the graves of Confederate Veterans in Elmwood Cemetery that are not located in the Hardee plot. Each April we hold a memorial service at the Hardee plot to honor these brave men.

In July 2005, the Fighting Joe Wheeler Camp hosted the showing of the movie "Gone With the Wind" at the Alabama Theatre in downtown Birmingham. The event was a huge success with attendance way above normal. Quite a number of young people were in attendance and exposed to a positive display of Confederate Heritage for the first time. It was a thrill to see these youngsters wanting to have their pictures taken with those of us in uniform.
